We’re delighted to share a conversation with Lisa Bowie, MD, Medical Director of Primary Care at Sturdy Health North Attleboro! Dr. Bowie shares how clinician coaching has helped to make her a better colleague and leader for her team and her patients.
- How long have you been in medicine, and what are your favorite parts about it?
I finished medical school 27 years ago and have been practicing at Sturdy for 24 years. My favorite parts of medicine are getting to be part of my patients lives not only long term but also in some of the scariest and most vulnerable times in the lives
- Can you tell us one of your favorite patient stories from working in medicine?
Years ago a patient of mine with developmental disabilities was placed in a group home when his father who was his primary care taker at time had cardiac issues. More than 10 years have passed and I have been able to continue taking care of this patient and share stories from his time living at home with his dad and be a constant in his life since the staff at his group home change frequently, I often know more about him and his history than they do. He leaves every visit with me by saying “Lisa, I love you, can I come back again to see you?”
- How has PE helped you as a clinician?
PE and clinician coaching has helped me to be a better colleague and leader by giving me tools and perspective to better understand human behavior and response and strategies to help others be the best version of themselves.
- Could you tell us about a time that a tip you learned came in handy, with a patient or colleague, for example?
The tip on connecting via the EHR made me rethink showing the screen of my computer with patients whether it is to show trends in labs or vital signs or using the internet to look up resources or information such as nutritional facts on certain foods while counseling patients about diet change. thus making the computer a tool and not something that is always taking attention away from the patient.
- What new skills are you looking forward to developing?
I am looking forward to working further on giving feedback and also on developing high functioning teams
- What do you look forward to most after each week’s new tip?
I try to practice new tips in my day to day work as often as possible to make them into habits and better connect with my patients.
