We’re excited to spotlight Joseph Daniel Hogue, MD, MBA, FAAFP, Chief Medical Officer at Baptist Memorial Health Care!
- How long have you been in health care, and what are your favorite parts about it?
I have been in medicine for 8 years post residency and loved every moment of it. I especially love teaching new doctors and helping those in need.
- Can you tell us one of your favorite patient stories from working in medicine?
One of the patients who has stayed with me most was a young person I cared for throughout their high school years. They were navigating a difficult season of life, including many of the questions that come with figuring out who you are and where you belong. Over time, our office became a place where they knew they could come, be heard, and feel supported.
When they graduated, they came back to see me and thanked me for being there through those years, for listening, encouraging them, and giving them a place where they felt comfortable being themselves. They were moving into the next chapter of their life with a greater sense of confidence and happiness in who they were becoming.
It was a powerful reminder that sometimes the greatest difference we make as clinicians isn’t found in a diagnosis or treatment plan. It’s in creating a space where someone feels seen, supported, and cared for when they need it most. I’m incredibly grateful to have been a part of that patient’s journey.
- Can you tell us about a time that a tip you learned came in handy, with a patient or a colleague, for example?
Active listening is always hard. I feel like I have so many conversations a day, mentally it can be exhausting. However, intentional active listening is something I work on daily.
- What new skills are you looking forward to developing?
Intentional coaching. I am working on getting to know each of my employees to provide them with intentional coaching that gives them the resources and tools they need in the realm of practice they are involved in.
- What do you look forward to most after each week’s new tip?
I look forward to putting these tools into practice and watching the success stories that come afterward. I also have suggested that all our residents and hospitalists use the Practicing Excellence modules to help develop skills that will stay with them forever.
