We are pleased to share the exciting work that our partners at King’s Daughters Medical Center are doing in their Behavioral Health Unit. Debi J. Colvin, BSN, RN, Senior Nurse Leader, Behavioral Medicine, and Zack D. Suttles, RN, Nurse Educator, Behavioral Medicine, led a poster presentation at the American Psychiatric Nurses Association 38th Annual Conference in Louisville, KY, last October.

In this presentation, KDMC presented the challenge they were looking to solve, their partnership with Practicing Excellence, and the transformational results they achieved.

The Challenge: Supporting Nurses in a Post-Pandemic Landscape

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, KDMC recognized the critical need to support psychiatric mental health nurses who were facing unprecedented stress and burnout. The KDMC Behavioral Health Unit implemented Practicing Excellence’s video-based, on-demand coaching platform featuring weekly 5-minute microlearning tips that focused on building skills around wellness. These targeted interventions created meaningful conversations about wellness and provided actionable skills for staff resilience.

Transformative Results: Impact on Staff and Patient Care

The outcomes for their behavioral health unit were remarkable:

  • Patient satisfaction Net Promoter Score increased from 55% to 67.9%
  • Nurse turnover reduced by 9.5% across the organization
  • Staff reported high engagement and relevance of wellness content

Nurses reported ease of use and relevance of topics as key benefits of this solution. Importantly, the communication skills developed around well-being were directly applicable to psychiatric mental health nurses in their patient interactions.

Congratulations to the KDMC Behavioral Health Unit on their transformative results in supporting psychiatric mental health nurses and enhancing overall healthcare delivery!
